Strong words capture Reconciliation Week
A CENTRAL theme of truth and togetherness echoed truly in Friday’s Reconciliation Week event at the Portland Civic Hall, with elders and emerging leaders sharing a common message.
More than 200 people took part in the annual event, hosted by the Glenelg Shire Council, which featured dances, speeches and music from the Gunditjmara and Aboriginal community.
This year’s theme for National Reconciliation Week is ‘Grounded in Truth. Walk Together with Courage’ and that underlying mantra resonated through the words of Gunditjmara Elder Aunty Denise Lovett, who performed the Welcome to Country ceremony to kick off the event.
“Today is about the truth and reconciliation,” Aunty Denise said.
“We must encourage each other to walk together for reconciliation as we celebrate Aboriginal people and our history.”
