Cafe Margaret & Agnes to reopen in a new location
JUST weeks after seeing their café gutted by a late-night fire, the owners of Margaret & Agnes are preparing to start again, and they’re promising to go bigger and better than before.
Standing in the empty stripped-back space of 73 Bentinck St – formerly Café Lazat – owners Anthony Vecchio and Mark Thornbury said the past fortnight has been a whirlwind.
“About three or four days after the fire, a customer called us and mentioned a couple of empty spaces along Bentinck St,” Mr Thornbury said.
“We looked at the empty cafés on Bentinck St and felt this one was the best equipped – it’ll provide us with more opportunity.
“It’s been a mad dash to get the contract signed so we can move in and start again.”
A fire, believed to be caused by an over-heating fridge, gutted the Percy St café at about 8pm on Sunday, June 30.
Tragically, it took place just one day before the business’ one year anniversary.
