Leadership change at Portland’s Coast Guard
THE new leader at the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Portland flotilla is pleased to be able to help boaters out after finding himself in a tricky situation last decade.
Flotilla Commander Chris Hulonce was elected to the flotilla commander position recently and said he and his wife Tara were travelling from South Australia to Apollo Bay on their new 45 foot fishing boat about 16 years ago when an exhaust fire nearly disabled them near Lady Julia Percy Island at 3am.
“This was the time before coast guard, but one of the local police monitored our progress every 10 minutes as we travelled slowly towards Port Fairy,” he said.
“So when we were at the Upwelling Festival a few years ago and I saw Coast Guard people, I thought ‘I can do this.’”
