Blooming daffodils mark help cancer fundraiser
AN IMPRESSIVE 3500 daffodils were donated to the Cancer Council Portland Unit by May Telfer and Les Walters last year, and this year is looking just as productive.
“Cancer touches nearly every family in some way,” Mrs Telfer said this week ahead of Daffodil Day, which is being held on Friday, August 23, this year.
“I do it to help the ladies raise funds.”
The bulbs have been planted at the extensive garden surrounding her Gorae West home for up to decades, and are a winter and spring favourite to brighten up her days.
The pair are busy at this time of year, picking at least once a week, and netting 55 bunches (of 11 to 12 flowers a bunch) to donate last month; they picked more than 100 more bunches this week.
“I had 1000 bulbs planted; I just like the yellow of daffodils, and they’re easy to care for,” she said.
“Some of the bulbs were moved to here 20 years ago.”
