Call for motorists to stay out of the service lane
THE Henty Hwy around the northern exit of the Portland Ring Rd can be a busy intersection at the best of times, but concerns have been raised that it could become more dangerous if vehicles keep using a service lane as a thoroughfare.
A nearby business has raised the issue of vehicles using the kerbside lane on the highway after exiting the Ring Rd on the way out of Portland – something it believes will become more of an issue as developments take place along the
stretch of road.
The purpose of the lane is to allow vehicles wanting to enter the businesses located along the Henty Hwy to do so safely by entering the lane and thus moving out of the way of other vehicles.
When the Observer visited the site, more than half the cars in a 30-minute period coming off the Ring Rd on to the Henty Hwy stayed in the service lane rather than the road proper until the service station about 300m north.
Many used the service lane as a way to get on to the highway when there were vehicles on the actual traffic lanes.
Trucks largely obeyed the road rules, due to their wider turning circle.
