Community volunteers devastated after shelter vandalised
VOLUNTEERS who have been painstakingly working for years to restore a local landmark have been left devastated and angry after a vandal wrecked some of their work.
About two weeks ago someone vandalised the new picnic shelter at Picnic Hill by spray painting it with graffiti, almost covering the interior.
It was a blow not only to those who might use the shelter – which has become popular among visitors to the site – but also to the volunteers who maintain the area and are now tasked with cleaning it up.
That is the Friends of Cape Nelson Landcare-Coastcare group, and president Lynn Murrell said whoever was responsible needed to know what effect it had on volunteers.
“They’re not having a go at society by doing this, they’re having a go at us,” he said.
The shelter was completed earlier this year by another tireless community volunteer in Gordon Page, and had proven to be popular with the many visitors to the site each day.
