Flu hits hard in Portland
THE ripple effect of the worst flu season on record has been felt across Portland, with a number of major employers noting a jump in absent staff in the past month.
To date, there have been 73 reported cases of influenza in the Glenelg Shire, dwarfing the previous record of 45 cases in 2017.
There were 39 reported cases in July alone, which is higher than any other annual total outside of 2017.
These figures are derived from the Victorian Government’s Department of Health, which collates statistics on infectious diseases and other conditions.
The data is only related to notifications received from medical practitioners and laboratories, and does not necessarily reflect the true incidence of disease, with many victims potentially not seeking medical assistance.
