Funding welcomed, more needed
THE Victorian Government has added a combined $1.77 million to the operating budget of Portland District Health and Heywood Rural Health for the 2019-20 financial year.
Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said Portland District Health (PDH) will receive $29.8 million, $1.46 million more than the previous 12 months, a 4.9% increase.
Heywood Rural Health (HRH) will receive $3.55 million, $310,000 more than the previous 12 months, an 8.7% increase.
While the announcement was welcomed by both hospital board presidents, they said more needs to be done.
“In order to provide a safe environment for the Portland community, Portland District Health needs to run a deficit budget,” PDH board president Dr Andrew Levings said.
“This issue is compounded by the new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA), nurse to patient ratios and locums.
“Unfortunately, the EBA change hasn’t been fully funded by the Victorian Government.”
