Getting the best for everyone from our tuna
“THEY’RE a superb eating fish if looked after. If not, they’re cat food, even the cat won’t eat them.”
Those are the words of Portland Sport Fishing Club member and fishing store owner John Johnstone, speaking about southern bluefin tuna on Thursday.
The sport fishing club had just been given $5000 from Victorian Fishing and Boating Minister Jaala Pulford to continue to spread the word of the “care for your tuna catch” initiative, part of the national Tuna Champions campaign.
The club has been on a mission to educate recreational anglers about getting the best from their catch, whether they intended to eat it, photograph it, or release it.
“Basically I’ve been a pretty strong advocate of caring (for all fish) for some time,” Mr Johnstone said.
“To get the best possible eating experience they really do need to be looked after.
“It was doing our heads in the bluefin tuna were coming in and not being looked after.”
