Heywood rapt with successful past players evening
THE Heywood Football Netball Club hosted a highly successful past players evening last Friday night and off the back of a great event, is planning for many more to come.
Past and present members alike got together for an evening devoted to looking back at a tumultuous and thrilling decade in the club’s history, the 1970s.
The Lions wound back the clock to the Western Border Football League era, with Les Cameron, the senior coach of Heywood for the 1972 and 1973 seasons, as the guest speaker on the night.
Organiser John Benbow said the club was thrilled with the support the community showed for the evening.
“It was honestly even better than we had originally hoped,” he said.
“We had Craig Keating come along and MC the evening and his polish as a speaker really helped.
“We shifted away from straight speeches and moved more towards interview style talks with him involved and that made for a very entertaining and engaging night.
“We had a pretty even mixture of past and present members on the night, with somewhere around 20 people at the night from the Les Cameron years specifically which was great considering it was 45-odd years ago now.”
