Lions devour Giants in wet and windy affair
DARTMOOR’S dream of adding another South West District Football League premiership to the club’s mantle will have to wait at least another year after the Giants were eliminated by Heywood on Sunday.
Played out in intense winds and heavy rain, the Giants and Lions contested the elimination final at Tyrendarra and after a heavy four-quarter slog, reigning premier Heywood progressed deeper into the finals with a 15.8 (98) to 5.4 (34) victory.
In the opening minutes of the match the Lions succeeded in snatching the momentum out of the hands of Dartmoor, pumping through the first goal of the game from the square and following it up less than a minute later with the second goal of the match launched from long range and on the run.
While the Giants produced a handful of scoring opportunities late in the quarter, by the time the final siren sounded Christian Howlett was the only player to have influenced the scoreboard for the side with a solitary point.
By then Heywood had slammed on 5.1 (31).
