Medical clinic to close
A PORTLAND medical clinic says it has been forced to close after being unable to find a suitably-qualified doctor.
Tristar Medical Group will shut the doors at its Fern St clinic on September 16, bringing to an end about 13 years in the city.
Its current doctor, Ali Rana, is leaving the practice and Tristar has not been able to find a replacement that meets government regulations.
Clinical services director Anne Gardner said Dr Rana had advised Tristar several months ago that he would be leaving, but the recruitment process had come up short.
Staff at the bulk-billing clinic had been offered positions in nearby practices, which some had accepted while others would be laid off with their full entitlements.
Ms Gardner said the clinic had to be closed because as a one-doctor practice Portland needed a doctor who could work unsupervised, but the only doctor that was available held a limited registration, meaning they needed on-site supervision.
“Unfortunately under the current regulations we can’t continue to operate the clinic,” Ms Gardner said.
