Narrawong gallery claims top award
NARRAWONG’S Bay of Whales Gallery and Coffee Shop was crowned Business of the Year at Glenelg Shire’s 2019 Business and Tourism Awards on Friday.
The home-based gallery operated by internationally-renowned realist wildlife artist Brett Jarrett and his partner Gerri Torpy was one of 13 organisations presented with a coveted award at the sold-out dinner.
Being a full time artist could be volatile and difficult, Mr Jarrett said when accepting the award, but “the one thing that has really helped with our venture out at Narrawong is the support of the community.”
“I thank Gerri so much for ideas in introducing the coffee shop to the gallery: I was very hesitant about that at the start.
“It’s boutique, it’s really nice, fits the gallery well and I really underestimated the pulling power of coffee.”
Ms Torpy added that the vanilla slice that she makes onsite was also a key to the business’ success, as was the gallery’s ability to break perceptions that art was “quite stuffy.”
