Plan for changes to Percy St
ONE of the busiest sections of Portland’s main street could be set for some safety improvements including median strips and a reduction in the speed limit – as well as a return to the past.
Glenelg Shire Council is looking at ways of improving safety on Percy St, between Tyers and Wade Sts, and wants public input on some of the options it is considering.
These include a raised median between Tyers and Fern Sts, to separate traffic, restrict U-turns and overtaking, providing a safety strip for pedestrians crossing the road, as well as lighting.
There would also be a review of the speed limit between those two streets, looking at the possibility of reducing it from 60km/h to 50km/h.
The line marking between Fern and Wade Sts would be changed to provide single lane two-way traffic – which would be a return to the past, before this section was double-laned in recent decades.
