Portland man on murder charge
A PORTLAND man has been charged with murder following a fatal stabbing in the city’s central business district early on Tuesday morning.
Cameron Oakley, 25, appeared in the Hamilton Magistrates’ Court via videolink from the Warrnambool Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
Oakley did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody until a committal mention on Friday, December 6.
Homicide Squad detectives charged Oakley following the death of a local man, Lachlan Hutchins, 24, in Portland on Tuesday.
It is believed an incident took place in the vicinity of the Henty St public toilet block shortly after midnight.
The victim presented at the Portland hospital with injuries shortly before 12.30am.
He received emergency treatment however died in hospital.
A section of Henty St and parts of the Woolworths and Aldi supermarket car parks were cordoned off on Tuesday, and SES volunteers assisted in preserving the scene.
Victoria Police homicide squad detectives, crime investigation unit detectives and Warrnambool-based crime scene officers came to Portland to assist with the investigation.
