Reduce by reuse
AS far as timing goes, an initiative by a group of Portland Secondary College students could not have happened during a better period.
With Victoria gripped in the midst of a recycling crisis, the VCAL students are launching two initiatives to cut down on waste.
Not by recycling, but by reusing.
As part of a community project the students had to do, they are trying to convince local cafes to switch from plastic or paper to metal straws and reusable “keep” cups.
The project has to be able to stand on its own after the students finish their course.
Their sales pitch has met with mixed results so far, but they’re determined to keep trying.
Sharn Robinson and Tanner Munn are the team behind the straw project.
