Tigers end with loss to Blues
A CHALLENGING Hampden Football League season came to a conclusion for Portland on Saturday, comfortably bested by Warrnambool at Reid Oval.
It’s been an arduous and gruelling campaign for the Tigers and the conditions against the Blues matched that theme well, with Warrnambool recording a 15.9 (99) to 1.4 (10) win in front of an ecstatic home crowd.
In the opening quarter all the attention was firmly fixed on Warrnambool full forward Darren Ewing, entering the match two goals away from a 100-goal season.
With all of Warrnambool’s attacking inside play aimed squarely at Ewing, the goal-kicking machine appeared to be overcome by nerves early, taking six shots on goal from various angles but converting just once.
With less than a minute remaining in the quarter however, Ewing raced to the top of the arc and secured a mark and a set shot from long range, kicking a thumping drop punt to secure his 100th goal.
