Portland Observer now two days a week
THE Portland Observer will be published just twice a week as of next week.
The newspaper has operated as a tri-weekly since September 1982 – the promise of boom times in Portland with the establishment of the aluminium smelter one of the catalysts of the move from two editions a week to three.
Those boom times no longer exist in the newspaper industry.
As of next week the Observer will have Tuesday and Friday editions – effectively the Monday and Wednesday editions will be rolled into one Tuesday paper.
Both the Tuesday and Friday editions will be available for purchase in the early morning.
Sadly, this also means a reduction in staff numbers in the Observer newsroom.
Two redundancy packages have been offered to Observer staff by management, the Spectator-Observer Partnership.
No changes have been made to the company’s other newspapers, the Hamilton Spectator and the Casterton News.
