Tigers experience division one stutter step
PORTLAND’S bid for premiership glory within the Hampden Netball League’s division one competition took a frustrating misstep on Saturday with a qualifying final loss to Port Fairy.
Portland and Port Fairy, who finished second and third respectively at the conclusion of the regular season, went head-to-head at Hamilton’s Melville Oval, with the Seagulls winning low-scoring tussle 27-16.
Prior to this match the two teams had clashed twice this season, once in round two (a narrow Portland win) and once in round 11 (a Port Fairy win).
The Seagulls fielded a vastly different line up in that second encounter, and on Saturday there was another significant change, adding shooter Jae Leddin to the court and it proved a rewarding inclusion, playing an instrumental role in the win.
Leddin steered her side to a valuable early advantage on the scoreboard with some efficient shooting in an otherwise low-scoring battle.
