Grand plan for jobs
WHAT’S better than one hundred? One thousand, of course.
At least that’s the hope of those behind a program that aims to get the region’s young people into work.
Westvic Staffing Solutions has been behind the ‘100 Jobs in 100 Days’ campaign in recent years, but after doing some maths, decided to up the ante.
And it began that last week when it chose Portland to launch its ‘1000 Jobs in 5 Years’ campaign.
Westvic’s previous campaigns have seen the 100-job target well and truly beaten in each of the years, with 743 apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities across the south west in the past four years, so it is looking at getting 257 such positions this year to meet the new target.
Chief executive Dean Luciani said while overall unemployment was low in the region, youth unemployment was twice the general rate.
“For us it’s about giving young people an opportunity and showing some patience,” he said.
“We were all young once, we all remember our first job and what a challenge it could be.”
