Split results for Coasters in second double header
PORTLAND’S exciting start to the Country Basketball League’s South West men’s home and away season continued over the weekend, picking up one win and one loss in back-to-back matches.
Portland’s season began on October 12-13, taking wins against Warrnambool Seahawks and Terang Tornadoes, and on Saturday the Coasters hit the road for the Bluewater Leisure Centre in Colac and pinched a third straight win, defeating Colac Kookas 82-77.
The Coasters slipped behind early, trailing by five points at the first break in play, but managed to even the ledger shortly before half time via a well-timed three-pointer from Nathan Hardingham.
In the third quarter the Coasters managed to recapture the momentum gained in the second term and pushed ahead for the first time, holding a two-point advantage heading into the last term.
With Jackson Dunlop and Jarra Blackney-Noter leading the way Portland exploded in the last quarter, pushing further ahead and eventually snatching a win against a quality opposition.
David Denboer was the man with the plan for the Coasters offensively, nailing three three-pointers and finishing the night with 20 points, while Dunlop finished with 18.
For Colac, brothers Nathan and Rhys Lemke did the majority of the damage, combining for 44 points.
