Iluka plant's first run THE first production run of mineral sands has been through the Iluka Resources Mineral Separation Plant in Hamilton. While the rutile and zircon produced was not quite up to production standard, it may be run through the plant again as the processing is further refined during the ramp up of operations in the first half of 2007. Iluka process engineer, Zaneta Mascarenhas, and Iluka community relations specialist, Greg Walcott, are shown here with the rutile which is used to make titanium. The Spectator toured the plant to watch its operation now that commissioning is completed and will publish a feature on it next week. HAMILTON and district firefighters gathered at Hamilton airport yesterday to fly out for another 'tour of duty' in Gippsland and the north-east. The strike team was due to fly out in a vintage DC3, but mechanical problems forced a last minute change and the crew flew out in other aircraft yesterday morning. CFA region five operations manager, Colin Watt, said the volunteers would be met by the region's strike team co-ordinator in Bairnsdale and would be put to use. The team was due back in Hamilton this morning. The two-day deployment allows volunteers to minimise disruption to their work and family lives, particularly during the festive season. A team will leave Hamilton on Christmas morning for the fires. "Firefighters don't get a break. This is on-going, so we will run this right through January," Mr Watt said. He encouraged CFA volunteers to contact their region office to sign up for a strike team. Picture: CHRIS RICHES. 061222cr3 23 December 2006 - Hamilton Spectator |
